Mahwah Police Department can only process applications for Mahwah Residents. Out of state residents must apply to the New Jersey State Police.

To All Firearms Applicants: The requirements of the new law signed on July 5th, 2022 as it relates to firearms permits will not be enforced until NJSP provides required Guidelines and implements the necessary procedures. All Firearms permit applications will be processed according to the below guidelines.

In order to obtain a firearm, you must meet eligibility requirements and comply with the statutes which govern firearms purchases in the State of New Jersey.

 
 

Timing & Allowance

Applications are handled ONLINE. This new system has been mandated by the Governor's Office to expedite the process and provide accountability for the length of time an application may take to process. The online application is applicant driven. Please ensure that you have entered the best phone numbers and best email addresses for yourself and your references.

The State of New Jersey has amended its legislation and only 1 handgun may be purchased every thirty (30) days unless an exemption is obtained. See P.L. ,2009 Chapters 104, 168 and 186

  • Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (FPIC) - Applicant must be 18 Years Old

  • Application for Pistol Purchase Permit - Applicant must be 21 Years Old

 

Gun Safety and Responsible Gun Ownership

Mahwah Police Department is in partnership with the BeSMART Program. The program is designed to help promote proper firearm storage and to normalize the conversation regarding responsible gun ownership in order to reduce child gun deaths.

The Mahwah Police Department Firearms Identification Unit assists residents with the application, processing, and registration of firearms. The Firearms Identification Unit may be reached at 201-529-1000 Ext. 211 or via e-mail at firearms@mahwahpd.org.

The firearms application process is now ELECTRONIC ONLY. Please follow the below instructions for the Firearms Reporting System (FARS) online application.

 

Online Application Procedures for Applicants

Visit the application website by clicking the button below:

  1. When you log on, you must enter the following Mahwah Police Department ORI #: NJ0023300


  2. Complete the online application. You may complete the application using a smartphone, mobile device, laptop, or desktop computer.

    When deciding how many permits you would like to get, remember:

    1. ONE Permit is required for each handgun you wish to purchase (each permit is $2)

    2. You can purchase 1 handgun in a 30 day period

    3. Permits are good for up to 180 days (with renewal after 90 days)

    4. If you decide you want another handgun permit and you didn’t get more than one initially, you will need to apply again.


  3. You will need to submit payment at the Police department for your permits and, if applicable, the Firearms Purchaser ID Cards (FPIC).

    2. Permits to Purchase handguns are $25.00 for each permit, and $50.00 for the initial ID card. Money orders only payable to “Twp. of Mahwah”.

    3. NO Cash or Personal checks will be accepted.

    4. Your application will not be considered complete and will not be processed until payment is received.

    5. Please include name of applicant on money order.

  • You will be receiving automated email updates throughout this new process.

  • Once your application is complete, a station representative will contact you to retrieve your FPIC and/or pistol purchase permit documents.

  • Please advise your references that the FARS system will email them the reference questions to be answered. Your references can complete the questions using a smartphone, mobile device, laptop, or desktop computer. Please advise them to complete the questions immediately to progress your background investigation.
