The Mahwah Police Department is pleased to introduce our new officer: K-9 Rino

The Mahwah Police Department is pleased to announce our new officer: K-9 Rino. He is an eleven-month-old German Shepherd excited to begin his work serving and protecting our residents. He and his partner, K-9 Officer Sean Hayes will begin their training in Narcotic Detection next week. We wish our K-9 Unit nothing but success as they get to work forming that bond between dog and handler.

K-9 police dogs serve as an invaluable asset to law enforcement agencies, utilizing their supreme olfactory capabilities and exceptional training to assist officers in a range of essential tasks. These highly skilled canines are typically German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, or Dutch Shepherds, chosen for their intelligence, agility, and loyalty. Trained from a young age, K-9 police dogs undergo a rigorous and specialized program to develop skills such as tracking down suspects, locating missing persons, detecting narcotics and explosives, and apprehending criminals. Their acute sense of smell enables them to search vast areas quickly, providing a significant advantage to law enforcement teams. Beyond their professional duties, these remarkable canine companions forge deep bonds with their handlers, creating an unbreakable partnership based on trust and mutual dependence. K-9 police dogs are heroes in their own right, working tirelessly alongside officers to maintain public safety and protect communities.
